Procedures

  • Action Action is no longer the main focus of the text or it has a symbolical/implicit/more general meaning.
  • Chronology Subjective and relative chronology. Different timelines and shifts in time.
  • Storyline(s) Many interwoven storylines, asking for the creative participation of the reader to put them together.
  • Perspective Changing of different perspectives need not be transparent.
  • Meaning Implicit, multiple interpretations, several layers of meaning beyond the concrete, diversity of themes and contexts.

Style

  • Vocabulary Diversity can be mastered (historical, regional and experimental vocabulary).
  • Sentence construction The sentences may be long and complex (historical, regional idiom.
  • Stylistic Challenging poetical language, e.g. due to historical distance.

Characters

  • Character Characters may be complex, ambiguous and/or unpredictable. There may be symbolic or implicit characterization. Historical context of characters can be complex.
  • Number Not important, even if the connections between many different characters are not clearly marked.
  • Relations Unpredictable, ambiguous, controversial relations are common.

At each level you will find a typology and a list of suitable books, a typology of the student as a reader and an inventory of appropriate classroom activities (‘transitions’), that help students to ‘LIFT’ their literary competence to a higher level.
