Literary Framework for Teachers in secondary education (LiFT-2)

The general aim of this project was to create a frame of reference for the development of literary competence within the context of literature teaching in secondary education in Europe (ages 12-18).

Such a frame of reference should make it easier for teachers to:

• identify differences between students
• provide books that fit in the ‘zone of proximal development’ of their students
• choose classroom activities that help students to ‘lift’ their literary competence to a higher level.

Alongside the national booklists we present for each level, there is also an international, European booklist. This list has been compiled from the national lists and aims to stimulate intercultural socialization in Europe.

Above you will find links to the literary framework for lower secondary (ages 12-15) and upper secondary (ages 15-19). In both frameworks we distinguish different levels of literary competence. The levels are designed to describe an ascending scale of literary competence, from limited competence in grade 7 to an extended level of literary competence for excellent students in grade 12.
