Procedures

  • Action Different rhythms of action: descriptions, reflections, dialogues, monologues.
  • Chronology Several timelines, non-chronological storyline.
  • Storyline(s) Several storylines, not explicitly interconnected.
  • Perspective Several perspectives are acceptable if they are not too experimental.
  • Meaning Texts with a certain degree of ambiguity and with different reading keys, themes related to philosophical and religious issues, even allegoric narrative. Some space left for reflection.

Style

  • Vocabulary The vocabulary is nuanced and may contain some words that are unknown to the reader. Slightly extended lexicon.
  • Sentence construction The syntax is neither banal nor too complex and too experimental. The sentences may be long but clearly structured.
  • Stylistic Stylistic diversity and richness, imagery, irony, allusions etc. rather transparent. Some ambiguity.

Characters

  • Character The book allows the reader to keep a distance from the characters. On the whole the characters can be more ambivalent and diverse, less apt for identification.
  • Number A number of characters can be dealt with, if their relationships are clearly defined.
  • Relations There may be ambiguous relationships, surprising evolutions in characters dynamics.

At each level you will find a typology and a list of suitable books, a typology of the student as a reader and an inventory of appropriate classroom activities (‘transitions’), that help students to ‘LIFT’ their literary competence to a higher level.
